Crucifix

19th century (?)
Museum of the Convent of St. John the Baptist, Müstair, Switzerland

I am suggesting a 19th-century date for this crucifix because of the type face used for the inri scroll. But the emphasis on pathos in presenting the dead and bloodied body harks back to an earlier era. The treatment of the putti carrying the instrument of Jesus' torture also suggests an 18th- or 19th-century date, considering the modeling of their bodies, the rosy cheeks, and the right putto's tears.
